 | John the One-Eyed
John Hus lived in Bohemia in the late 1300's and early 1400's. He read the writings of John Wycliffe and became convinced of the doctrine of salvation in Christ alone. This made Hus a heretic, and though he was granted a safe-conduct by the Emperor to come and explain his doctrines, he was arrested instead, and burned at the stake. |
Yet Hus's exemplary life and his writings continued to have influence. When the King of Bohemia died, the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire took the Bohemian throne, determined to bring the Hussite Bohemians into line with papal authority. The Bohemians revolted, and they chose John Ziska, known as John the one-eyed, to be their commander in chief.
The Bohemian nation was hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned. All of so-called Christendom was allied against them. Ziska sent emissaries to "sue for quarter," which means he asked that if he and his men were conquered, the enemy would spare the peasantry and not burn a swath across the land or rape women and children.
But the hard-hearted rulers of the Holy Roman Empire declared that as Bohemia had defied them, and was willing to go to war as though she were a nation of equal strength, Bohemia would be granted no quarter. The duty of every Christian, according to them, was to level Bohemia and afflict her people. They warned the Hussites that no mercy would be shown them, for they did not deserve mercy.
The war was soon engaged. Ziska, with very few men and small provisions, retreated before the advancing armies up into the high hills where enormous wagons were loaded with great, jagged boulders. As soon as he and his men were up in the heights, his infantry pushed the wagons down the steep hills, right onto the onrushing enemy. These massive and primitive "avalanches" broke the charging lines, and Ziska's men wheeled around and attacked, scattering the enemy.
Warfare at that time favored overly-armored knights on equally armored horses. Ziska used this to his advantage. Knights on horseback could smash through any infantry, but they could not break down fortifications, not even wooden walls. Warfare was designed to be out in the open plain.
So Ziska designed wagons that had side walls that could be quickly put up and braced. He would use the high hills to his advantage, take his men up the steep paths with the wagons, and then quickly raise his mobile fortifications on the wagons while the over-weighted horses of his enemies tried to keep up.
On uneven footing, with high walls against them, the charging armies exhausted themselves in fruitless attacks, and when they were worn down, Ziska and his men would break apart the walls and counter-charge.
Even so, the invading armies practiced no quarter against any towns or farms they crossed. And so Ziska, recognizing that even in retreat his enemies would be cruel, stuck to the bargain and completely annihilated his enemies in defeat. He had no choice, for the rejection of quarter meant that survivors who he spared would regroup and attack again. As he and his countrymen had been declared worthy of death by the supreme religious leaders of the day, Ziska had to make sure that the enemy armies were decimated. But he ordered that women and children be shown mercy.
Eventually, as the war continued, Ziska relented from the practice of no quarter as much as he dared. Ordinary soldiers who were not papist clergy were given an opportunity to switch sides when captured.
Yet, after repeatedly being defeated by the Bohemians, the leaders of the Holy Roman Empire sued for quarter. But Ziska had to refuse. He recognized that his own spiritual father, John Huss, had been killed because he had trusted the guarantees of corrupt religious leaders. For Bohemia to be safe, Ziska had to insist that the armies of the Holy Roman Empire leave its borders or die in combat. More battles followed, with the armies of the Holy Roman Empire less and less enthusiastic about fighting Ziska. Ziska routed the Emperor in 1420 and again in 1422, ensuring over a decade of freedom in Bohemia.
The religious leaders had guaranteed a war that they could not win, against a victor who could not afford to show them mercy. Let it be a lesson to those who declare they have a prerogative not to show mercy; it puts your opponent in a position where he or she is forced not to show mercy. Knowing the severity and butchery of his enemy, having heard them declare in public that they had a right not to show him mercy, Ziska had to choose to destroy them.

I read FFF occasionally, and I've just happened across your blog following the links on the forum. I see you are looking into researching the molestation of children by graduates and men from FBC. The "preacher" who preformed the wedding ceremony for myself and my first husband was convicted of child molestation on two little girls and is serving time. He was a graduate of Hyles Anderson Collage. His name is Russell K Overla. He was the pastor of Lakeside Baptist Church in Cedar Lake, IN. I know it was talked about in the Hammond Times newspaper. It was probably about 4-7 years back.

I'm really glad you're blogging now....But hearing about your experience of Fundamentalism as a movement, and the whole Hyles scandal and all that's involved... it just makes my eyes bug out of my head, because I sincerely had *no idea* that this kind of thing was so entrenched or widespread in ostensibly "conservative" and "evangelical" churches.
I always thought of myself as a Fundamentalist, meaning simply that I believe the Bible is inspired, reliable, and the only source of authority for church doctrine and practice. I used to get upset when non-Christians spoke of Fundamentalism as though it were some sort of oppressive regime and Fundamentalist Christians as ignorant bigots, because to me that just showed that people had a totally wrong impression of the Bible and indeed of the Lord Himself....Now I realize, however, that my understanding and experience of Fundamentalism -- whatever the word may have originally meant, or whatever I understood it to mean -- is a far cry from the kind of thing that's going on in the US Bible Belt (and perhaps even in some areas of Canada, I don't know).

I think blogs are a terrific way to expose darkenss to the light. I recall a childhood phrase...give someone enough rope to hang themselves. I think I've grown to understand just how dangerous and closed the group you are tangling with are. I knew it had started with Brent Stevens, but had no idea what you had been through. I'm glad these men can't hide on their forum. And isn't it great that someone in Canada who knew little to nothing about this arrogant sect can see them for what they are?

It seems aside from her childrens books for Bob Jones Press, Valkyries series for Moody, and maintaining her highly informative (yet mentally delusional) blog... it seems Ms Massi has also written a book on Tae Kwan Do. When others told him in the thread that---essentially---he needed to be less obsessed, Marty's ventriloquist's dummy Over It (who may have been Marty himself or Marty's recruit, Scott) stepped in three times to hurl insults and defend his master. Marty, as usual, took the more dignified route for his known persona and challenged me to prove that I know Scripture better than he does. (Well, I do know that stalking is unacceptable in a pastor, Marty!) But as I noted previously, Marty created the character and name of "Over It" and recruited a fellow from his church to play the part. Marty, I believe, has also posted as Over It, though Marty denies this. But then, Marty's history of obsession, desperation, and vindictiveness doesn't make him very credible.
But for the moment, I will assume that Over It is somebody Marty recruited from his church, a person who did not go to Hyles-Anderson and knew nothing about the place, according to Marty himself. Read the following quotes and consider if a pastor who recruited a person to post things like this is fit to even be in a church let alone in church office:

Cracker Barrel- Several patrons of the renown eatery were horrified Sunday when a terribly disfigured and highly volatile woman came screaming into the restaraunt during the noon rush.
Identified as famed author, bloger, and International World Cup Pac Man Video Game Champion, Jeri Massi, was restrained by the manager and two bus boys. "I thought by the injuries she'd been in a bad car wreck and was in total shock when she came screaming into the place," commented a customer.
She was rushed by ambulance to General Hospital where the Chief Plastic Surgeon and technical advisor to the hit show Extreme Make Over was quoted as saying, "This looks bad. I'm just a doctor. Not a miracle worker." You can imagine the embarrasment of the doctors, nurses, and Cracker Barrel Manager when they discovered, after Ms Bassenco was calmed down, that there was in fact, no accident.

Then there are the horrbile things that Over It has posted to Vic Nischik (who posts as Stephan Peters) at Marty's direction. Vic Nischik is the man who first broke the silence about the wicked corruption of Jack Hyles when Vic published WIZARD OF GOD, a book that documented the lies and power plays of Hyles as Hyles stole away Vic's wife Jenny. For having done such a thorouogh job of detailing what he suffered from Jack Hyles, Vic has earned the undying hatred of the followers of Hyles. Hence, hatred of Vic has passed from Marty to Scott even though Scott knows very little of the story and has certainly never read the book, WIZARD OF GOD.  | The Story that grows and growsI posted yesterday about the lamentable case of a "pastor" who went trolling on the Fighting Fundamentalist Forum under an alias, got caught, and now is using a cover story to deny that he ever actually posted as the troll "Over It". My belief is that Marty did it so that he could maintain a certain dignity under his "Pastor" facade while giving himself venting room and then a certain sense of power in being as malicious as he liked as Over It. |
So how do you tell if a person is lying? Well, you consider if the story he tells is credible. According to Marty, he "created" the screen name but then had nothing to do with it. That alone is pretty incredible. Most people create their own screen names. This idea of passing off a screen name is pretty loopy.
You also look to see if a story changes, and it has. And you look to see if a story told does not match what is actually going on. Here are Marty's three versions of the development of the troll, "Over It,":

I am not Over It. Why is it so hard for you to accept that I sat down with some friends and having a few laughs over the nonsense that goes on in here that the idea for Over It came up?
Yes, I had a part in creating him. No I do not and have not posted as Over It.
So there are problems with Marty's versions of the story. First, he denies ever posting as Over It, yet he acknowledges that the guy who allegedly does post as Over It never went to Hyles-Anderson College. So how does Over It post so knowledgeably about HAC? Second, he switches from the "I just passed it on" version to acknowledging to sitting down with friends and working on the concept of Over It. Indeed, posting under Over It, he or one of his boy-toys acknowledged that Marty developed the concept of Over and the plan of how he would behave. That's a lot more than just creating a screen name. By the end of Marty's three accounts, the story has moved from Marty handing over a name to somebody else to Marty sitting down with several people and developing a plan for a character and how that character will behave. Marty also asserts that he retained control over "Over It" when he admits that at times he told his alleged accomplices to "tone it down".
It's pretty clear that as pastor of his church and the guy in charge, that Marty's been engaging in the power play thrill of getting some of his more sheep-like followers to play his game along with him. This is the genuine Hyles training in evidence. A church leadership becomes a gang of thugs who operate in secret and make back room deals. I've been documenting stuff like this for two years now, and it is valuable to see a church that is still small begin to learn the Jack Hyles system of pastoring by intimidation.
And speaking of pastoring by intimidation, I got this rather cryptic warning from Marty himself last night:
"BTW, Bass, don't become a detective.... what a full life you lead. I also see you have yet to answer some theological questions I posted to you about what you actually believe about the Rapture and future events."
It was amusing to wonder if Marty was trying to threaten me or muster the last of his "pastoral power" and give me an order. Who knows? I have posted openly about my views, and Marty is off on one of his "if anybody does something I call sin, I am justified in committing my sin" tangent.
But what really gives the lie to Marty's claim that he never posted as Over It is that
1) the story gets more intricate every time he tells it.
2) Marty and Over It share the same spelling error. I ran a count last night on the spelling error "of coarse," which Marty, as a Hyles-Anderson graduate who took the equivalent of a sixth grade class in English, often misspells. Since March of 2003, Marty has used this misspelling 18 times. Over It has used it in five posts (but six times altogether, as it appears twice in one of the five posts), and a short timer troll named Pastor Raymond (also created by Marty, I assume) used it once.
3) Marty and Over It have identical ethics and methods regarding personal responsibility. Both rely on the premise that wrongdoing (or what they view as wrongdoing) committed by another person entitles them to commit wrongs. In fact, in one post, Marty seems to be insisting that he is not Over It because I do not believe in a rapture. If you've ever raised children, you've heard this logic before. It's called blameshifting, and it's a sign of guilt.
4) Other elements such as the timing of the way that Over It and Marty both stay away for roughly the same time periods and come on at the same time periods have probably been noted by others on the forum.
I don't think trolling is all that serious, but I do think that when a pastor does it so that he can sidestep his pastoral responsibilities to lead a sober and dignified life he is indicating that he is unfit to hold church office. And certainly, the constant lying and blame shifting about the matter reveals an awful lot about Marty's character and the way he runs his church.

A Startling admission from Pastor Marty Braemer about the poster named "Over It"For several weeks now, one or two posters on the Hyles-Anderson forum of the FFF have noticed that an extremely vitriolic and unpleasant poster named Over It shares many characteristics with "Pastor" Marty Braemer. After weeks of denying that he is Over It, Marty admitted last night that yes, he did create the screen name Over It. As so many of these Hyles-Anderson pastors will do, he then excused his actions (and his deceptions about it) by claiming that he does not post as Over It (although he created the screen name). Others, he claims, post as Over It. Here's an overview for regular readers of my blog, just to give you a better idea of the Hyles-Anderson mentality regarding the conduct of a pastor: |
Over It first appeared in the HAC forum in late January 2004.
On January 23, in the Hyles-Anderson forum, Marty Braemer rather rashly admitted to reading my blog (yet again) and reported back to the HAC forum on what was there. Here's the post, with an opener by Clarksville snipped for brevity:

So Marty disappeared and Over It appeared on January 26. Over It made a preliminary post on talebearing, and then settled in on a thread where a poster named "nothing else matters" warned Marty Braemer about his obsession with these words:

You have got to get off of this forum. I mean this when I tell you that it is hurting your image immensely: I believe that you are becoming obsessed with this thing. At first you use to be a casual poster, however, when you start logging on at 12:30 in the morning and various other times throughout the day you move from casual to habitual. What in God's dear name makes you think that you are going to change these people regarding these issues with Jack Hyles. LET IT GO MAN! You don't have to defend Jack's honor or his reputation... what you need to do is start worrying a little more about your own.
So rather than get into this rather embarrassing thread that warns him he is becoming obsessed and is losing his self control, Marty uses "Over It," who actually started out as fairly moderate.
I don't believe that Marty created Over It and walked away to let others use the screen name. That doesn't even make sense. Read the Over It posts on January 26th 2004. That's Marty all right, defending himself through a second screen name while he uses his primary screen name to pretend to be too dignified and self confidant to answer.
We also see Mary using Over It to come in as one of those many alleged outside observers who periodically come in to give their "unbiased" opinion. This post by Marty's second screen name, Over It, also appeared on the same day as that which I quoted above:

Pretty soon, of course, empowered by anonymity and the sense of thrill any person gets who allows himself to fall into cowardice, Marty and whoever else shared Over It were going hog wild. Of course, as time has passed there was the necessity of lying to maintain the secrecy. But lies to many HAC pastors are inconveniences. When you stop to think that Marty and perhaps some of his pals are hiding behind a screen name to hurl insults at a woman, then it becomes all the more ironic to see them talk about anybody else's "sick mind." But then, where would Hyles-Anderson be without the blindness of its followers?
