The Narrative Version of Secret Radio is Updated

Secret Radio has been transferred in narrative order (so that it reads from the first entry through to the last) to the archive site. It also has a spiffy new template, so click the reload button a few times, and be patient for a second or two as the new template loads. It looks terrific. Many thanks to RJ Anderson for the design. The Table of Contents is presented below.

Web site, web site, or website? That is the question!

The American Heritage Dictionary was our standard for spelling and usage when I taught English at Greenville Technical College. For American English, the AHD is (or at least was) considered a suitable academic reference. The editors offer this comment on using newly coined "techno" words appropriately in professional or academic correspondence:

The transition from "World Wide Web site" to "Web site" to "website" seems to have progressed as rapidly as the technology itself. The development of website as a single uncapitalized word mirrors the development of other technological expressions which have tended to evolve into unhyphenated forms as they become more familiar. Thus "email" has recently been gaining ground over the forms "E-mail" and "e-mail", especially in texts that are more technologically oriented. Similarly, there has been an increasing preference for closed forms like "homepage", "online", and "printout".

The rules usually move towards simplification. So if you can avoid hyphens, do so. If you can avoid capitalizing, do so (but never break the established rules of capitalization!)

Terry Molloy, slated for Chicago TARDIS

Actor Terry Molloy of Davros fame is scheduled to be at Chicago TARDIS in November, appearing alongside Paul McGann.

I met Terry at United Fan Con in Boston, where he did a terrific job recounting his experiences on Doctor Who and demonstrating his talents. Click here to see my journal entry of meeting him. If you're a Doctor Who fan, I highly recommend the recent Davros CD: a great story, very well done. Molloy is quite cold and menacing, and yet believably resigned and filled with despair as the evil Davros. And Colin Baker's Doctor is a good mix of justness, sarcasm, and genuine tednerness (at times) that makes him echo the Third Doctor very believably

Words of Wisdom and a sobering observation:

Over on the Texas Baptist College forum of the Fundamentalist Forums, Kevin Keever writes,
I heard a preacher say, "I'm not preachin' now, I'm tellin' the truth." That is funnnnnyyyyy. Well, not really. Here is why.

When 9/11 took place, our church had a guest speaker in for a Mon/Tues meeting. Well he couldn't fly home because of the grounded air traffic so he stuck around and our pastor had him preach on Wednesday night as well. He was asked to preach a sermon from a series he had been doing on the significance of numbers in the Bible. He went on and on about the number 9 and the number 11. He mentioned how significant it was that the date was 9/11, and the time of the attacks was 9:11 am, and the address of the WTC towers was 911 "something street," and so on. I can't remember if he said one of the flight numbers was Flight 911 or not, but it wouldn't surprise me at this point. I just kept thinking about the above-mentioned "joke."

Why do some (not all for you BAPTIST) IFB preachers think that they can say whatever in the world they want and that is ok.

2 Peter 2:18 - For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.

This may not be exactly right in it's context, but those now seem like vain words to me. Whether those numbers he gave were correct of not, they were vain. I go to church to hear the Bible preached, not someone's opinion about numbers that are actually insignificant, at least to me. I want to know what the number 9 or 11 has to do with my children's salvation, my spirituality or lack thereof, or the foundational health of my church and home. Matthew 12:6 says we will give an account of every idle word we speak...pot to kettle...pot to kettle. WOW. "Idle"...does that word mean unproductive? :-)

Just some thoughts. Oh, you wanna know who that preacher was don't you. Well, I'm not one to gossip or criticize someone for being way off on his facts, so I don't want to say his name on this public forum. Sorry.

P.S. Plain and simple folks, the address of the WTC is not 911 whatever street. He may not have been outright lying for the sake of the sermon, but he was certainly misinformed. Actually, it wouldn't be a big surprise if he was out right lying... the Bible says that God is true and ALL men are liars. I am, you are, and so is Dr. Whoever it was that preached that sermon. :-) Ha. It was:

"Dr." Dean Miller - Pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Colorado Springs, CO.

Straight talk from the horse's mouth!
And now from the other end of the horse....

On the Oklahoma Baptist Forum, Marine declares that the half has not been told.

Of course it hasn't! The reason for this is the IFB preacher's Wall of Silence, a conspiracy to keep mum that rivals the famous NYPD "Blue Wall". For three decades, IFB preachers and evangelists have known about gross sin and yet have refused to obey the Bible and confront the sin. They have merely separated, or groused about things, or turned to their own stage show productions of preaching----or all three.

Robert Sumner was the first to make things public, but the weight of the evidence, and the clarity of the argument against the corruption spreading through Fundamentalism was carried by Vic Nischik, Voyle Glover, and the efforts of the Michigan News team that produced PREYING FROM THE PULPIT (sound track linked at right). Once the wheels got turning, others (including preachers) have joined the effort to document abuses and apply Biblical rules of discipline. But it has been a slow and obstructed process because so many IFB preachers have no intention of making themselves unpopular by admitting that preachers are not the grand, elevated beings so often portrayed. After all, deceived laity is a contented and obedient laity. And a preacher who professes that he is nothing and would fall into sin if grace didn't hold him back is not playing the role of the superman that IFB clergy have cast for themselves.

Elsewhere, Buckwheat comments on this conspiracy of corrption and silence.

EX-LONGVIEW PRINCIPAL FACES MORE CHARGES
By: MEGAN MIDDLETON & KENNETH DEAN, Staff Writers May 24, 2004

LONGVIEW - Another round of molestation charges and indictments against a former Longview Baptist Temple Academy principal has left church members in shock and the once "trusted and respected," educator facing a total of 18 felonies in two counties.

Russell Thomas Hirner, 42, of Kilgore was charged in Gregg County with 16 counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child on Friday after state District Judge David Brabham opened a sealed indictment against Hirner.

Hirner, who served as principal of the school for eight years until he was resigned last year, has been in the Rusk County Jail since early March.

A Rusk County grand jury indicted Hirner earlier this month on one first-degree felony count of aggravated sexual assault of a child and one second-degree felony count of indecency with a child.

The 16 counts of aggravated sexual assault, which range from on or about January 1994 to December 1996, involve one person, Gregg County Assistant District Attorney Lance Larison said in a phone interview Monday.

  Mail Call!
Peace, Did you get the prayer I sent? For "Andreas," whoever you are. When I see "Szabo," I think SPAM. You are in the can, my man. Peter, in all kindness, I thnk you just don't get it. I could try to explain it again, but I would have to start charging you. Time to move on. Matt, I did my best on short notice. I hope you'll let me know what the editors say. But the more you can let me know in advance, the more I can help before your deadline. Wordsmith Do you get it now? Do you think I should add the details I explained to Episode Ten? Shaun, I am dying to know who the other 15 are, but the first one is great. I hope to be there!
