In a thread entitled, "An Honest Question For Hyles followers?" on the FFF, Deaconman theorizes that maybe the current hardliners who refuse to see the mountain of evidence of corruption and scandal at Hyles-Anderson College never experienced the hardest knocks first hand. It has generated some discussion and open comments about the experience of living under legalism. |
I was struck by a great post from Smellin' Coffee, a regular poster on the FFF and a former student of HAC, now mercifully set free. Here is an excerpt, but I recommend you go read the entire post:
See, the kids were able to see a different side to the staff members. The coach who took a pocket knife and cut a slit off the tongue of a third grader (in front of a bus load of kids), gets up and screams at the kids in chapel for bad behavior. What kind of message does that relay? The principal who "bent the rules" for some kids (because of who their parents were) and then "break the rod" (figuratively, not literally) over the student whose parents went to another local church, making the kid feel everyone was against him. The teacher who literally decked a student, sending him reeling down the bleachers, gets up and preaches in chapel the next day as if nothing had happened. The high school kid who sodomized a junior high kid in the locker room (caught by a teacher) was kicked out of school, but allowed to attend Teenage Soul-Winning the next week after his suspension. The Hyles-Duckles Camp Director who literally flogged a camper (bare-back with a belt) in front of the assembly (as a warning not to "behave like this guy") who then exposes the kids to "Jesus really does love you!"

Just for fun tonight I did a Google search on Jeri Massi's name. It seems aside from her childrens books for Bob Jones Press, Valkyries series for Moody, and maintaining her highly informative (yet mentally delusional) blog... it seems Ms Massi has also written a book on Tae Kwan Do.
Okay, let me see if I got this:
Social drinking, Calvinist thinking, IFB exposing, Star gazing, Horoscope reading, Dr Who watching, Blog updating, FFF posting and now Karate kicking Jeri "Bassenco" Massi. Whew! That's a full life.
Wax On - Wax Off!
OK, I was a little creeped by the thought that this grown man is out perusing Google to dig up information on me. I mean, at what point does it become cyber stalking? But that's something to ask a lawyer, and I knew at the start that when I confronted the corruption of First Baptist of Hammond and Hyles-Anderson College that I would be harassed. It's happened to other women who tried to stand up to that place; it will happen to me.
But I didn't realize how much it would weird out other people who may or may not like me but think an obsession with getting info on me is abnormal. So a person who goes by "I have to laugh" (often shortened to IHTL) posted the following:

IHTL Response: The there are those like you with NO LIFE...you've proven it once again...don't you have a TV show to watch or something...
In my experience on the FFF, IHTL actually has several reservations about my approach to the problems in Fundamentalism. As I recall, he's stated a couple of times some specific issues he has with my approach to things or the way I come across. So we're not pals like Vic and I are, and I don't think we've ever even exchanged an e-mail, though we're not openly antagonistic towards each other at all. Just sometimes agree and sometimes disagree. But he's pretty clear on his ethical outlook. The very idea of searching Google on my name apparently strikes him as being far too obsessive.
But here's the drop dead laughable post in the thread that struck me even more forcibly than Marty's post about looking up my name and accusing me for my lifelong study of martial arts:

Yes, readers, the Church Police are among us. First, I hasten to say that on the FFF, the time is always Central Time, so if you post at 12:30 a.n. EST, it looks like you posted at 11:30 (during what is traditionally a church time). That post by Over it was so funny that I posted the following:

 | Have I Been Remiss?
In a post on the FFF, the frustrated Marty Braemer has found a sort of accusation against me. Marty has discovered that I study TaeKwon Do. Apparently he thinks it is some sort of secret, unaware that just about everybody else on the FFF knows this, and I've posted anecdotes of my martial arts career in the past. I've written an account of my experiences under the guidance of the remarkable Billy Hong (pictured at left) and my tenure in Hong's TaeKwon Do school. The story has been hit several thousand times and has been one of my most-read files on my website. |
I should explain that the Hyles-approved method of dealing with somebody who demands accountability is to search out the person's life for things to accuse in response. If you can't find something, you create something or make something up (hence the Hyles ploy of accusing Vic Nischik of being a womanizer, and when that didn't work, of being queer, all because Nischik confronted Hyles of stealing away his wife's affections).
I'm certainly sinful enough to have a huge list of sins and flaws to my charge, but it's sort of a drag on these guys that I'm open about advocating study of the stars (as they are God's design and the sign of His authorship of the universe), enjoying Doctor Who, and studying TaeKwon Do.
But I'm amazed that Marty didn't know until now that I'm a fourth degree black belt in TKD. And I'm stunned that he actually had to do a Google search to find it out (Yes, he did a Google search on me. Obsessed? Maybe!)
So for my readers who may not know this, I am a fourth degree blackbelt in military style TaeKwon Do (not sport), and I have written a book about my school and training, and click here for the link.
