I heard a preacher say, "I'm not preachin' now, I'm tellin' the truth." That is funnnnnyyyyy. Well, not really. Here is why.
When 9/11 took place, our church had a guest speaker in for a Mon/Tues meeting. Well he couldn't fly home because of the grounded air traffic so he stuck around and our pastor had him preach on Wednesday night as well. He was asked to preach a sermon from a series he had been doing on the significance of numbers in the Bible. He went on and on about the number 9 and the number 11. He mentioned how significant it was that the date was 9/11, and the time of the attacks was 9:11 am, and the address of the WTC towers was 911 "something street," and so on. I can't remember if he said one of the flight numbers was Flight 911 or not, but it wouldn't surprise me at this point. I just kept thinking about the above-mentioned "joke."
Why do some (not all for you BAPTIST) IFB preachers think that they can say whatever in the world they want and that is ok.
2 Peter 2:18 - For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
This may not be exactly right in it's context, but those now seem like vain words to me. Whether those numbers he gave were correct of not, they were vain. I go to church to hear the Bible preached, not someone's opinion about numbers that are actually insignificant, at least to me. I want to know what the number 9 or 11 has to do with my children's salvation, my spirituality or lack thereof, or the foundational health of my church and home. Matthew 12:6 says we will give an account of every idle word we speak...pot to kettle...pot to kettle. WOW. "Idle"...does that word mean unproductive? :-)
Just some thoughts. Oh, you wanna know who that preacher was don't you. Well, I'm not one to gossip or criticize someone for being way off on his facts, so I don't want to say his name on this public forum. Sorry.
P.S. Plain and simple folks, the address of the WTC is not 911 whatever street. He may not have been outright lying for the sake of the sermon, but he was certainly misinformed. Actually, it wouldn't be a big surprise if he was out right lying... the Bible says that God is true and ALL men are liars. I am, you are, and so is Dr. Whoever it was that preached that sermon. :-) Ha. It was:
"Dr." Dean Miller - Pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Colorado Springs, CO.
