I've been helping the IS department at work get their documents together for approval. This is not my department, but for weeks my work was stalled owing to a project manager who was out having a baby. So I edited the IS department's required documentation and really enjoyed seeing how they went about meeting FDA requirements. I finished up a couple weeks ago, and the documents have gone to Corporate for approval. Much to my delight, the manager of IS presented me with a $20 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble. Apparently my enthusiasm for the project was refreshing. So today I purchased the audio book version of Morality for Beautiful Girls which is the third or fourth in the series of No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency mysteries by Alexander McCall Smith and R. A. McCall Smith. the first book, No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, is definitely the best. |
| At first, I was put off by the idea of a mystery set in hot, dusty, impoverished Africa (which just goes to show my huge ignorance of Africa). But from the first page of the first book, the delightful, warm (at times hilarious) tone of the story captured my heart and mind. The lead character is an African woman, and she is an amazing mix of an ageless wisdom, practiced and self-disciplined kindness, and down to earth common sense. Her methods of detection will both startle and charm the American reader. I thoroughly recommend these books, but start with the first one first! | ![]() |
